World Book Day

On Friday 14th March we celebrated ‘World Book Day’. We all dressed up as characters from books. Even the teachers joined in the fun!
In class we all entered a competition to design a World Book Day bookmark. Other activities included creating our own synopsis for a book and writing book reviews.
Here are our photos. Don’t we look good?

Our visit to the Millennium Stadium

On Tuesday 11th March we visited The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff as part of our 'Wonderful Wales topic.' We had a really enjoyable tour of the stadium.
We went into the 'Press Room' which was named after Ray Gravell, before going into the home and away changing rooms. We saw some of the welsh rugby and football jerseys hanging up. A few of the names we recognized were Leigh Halfpenny, Sam Warburton, Gethin Jenkins and Gareth Bale.
Afterwards we walked through the tunnel the players run out from. Music was playing loudly as if it were a match day.
Later on we were able to sit in the best seats in the stadium. These were made of leather and were very comfortable. This is where members of the Royal Family sit and very special guests. The hospitality rooms were very nice too and there was an excellent view of the pitch.
We learned that birds of prey are used to stop other birds nesting in the roof. The main type of bird used is the Harris Hawk.
Our tour guide said that we asked sensible questions and we were very well behaved.

Making Welsh cakes

This term our topic is ‘Wonderful Wales’. We will be finding out lots of interesting things and taking part in different tasks, all with a welsh theme.
Last week we were finding out about St. Dwynwen. We listened to the story of St. Dwynwen on the interactive white board, before re-telling it in our own words. In preparation for ‘Dydd Santes Dwynwen’ (January 25th), we made our own welsh cakes.
We went out into the hall to work with Miss Massey who is a very good cook! We learned about all the different ingredients needed to make welsh cakes and we did all the mixing ourselves. Lots of fun was had by all!

Our Art Week – Clarice Cliff

During our Art week we found out about the designer Clarice Cliff.
We looked at many of her designs on the internet to see what colours she used and to look more closely at her distinctive style.
Mrs King showed us lots of Clarice Cliff artefacts and fabrics to help us with our art work.
We started making sketches of our own in our sketch books, before making much larger designs. Oil pastels, paint and bright felt pens helped us complete our designs.
Our lovely, bright wall display has really helped to cheer up our classroom. We are also hoping to create another wall display in the hall.

Football Skills

On a Tuesday afternoon we have football skills. We are learning how to develop our ball skills. So far we have practised throwing, catching, dribbling & controlling the ball as well as participating in team games. We are also trying to work sensibly together in pairs & small groups. We are having lots of fun!

Castell Henllys

On Thursday 24th October our class visited Castell Henllys, an Iron Age Hill Fort in Pembrokeshire. It took us a long time to get there, but it was well worth it when we did.
We found out lots about the everyday life of the Celts in Wales. We went inside a ‘roundhouse’ to discover how Celtic people cooked, made bread and made clothes. We made our own bracelets out of ‘willow’ and we were able to try weaving a basket.
We also found out about the different materials used to make Celtic roundhouses. We had a go of using ‘wattle and daub’ ourselves and it was very messy indeed!!
Before we left we all had our faces painted to make us look like Celtic warriors.
We would like to thank all the parents and grandparents who came along to help us.
A good time was had by all!
