Today we went to the Royal Mint and had a lovely time. We found out how our coins are made and even designed and made our own coin badge. We were amazed how many coins are made a week and that the Royal Mint makes coins for countries all over the world. We held discs of the 2012 Olympic Medals and found that they were really heavy.

Celtic Soup
As part of our topic on the Celts we made a Celtic soup. We looked at the vegetables that were available in their time and peeled and chopped a selection of them. We used carrots, parsnips, onions and herbs. To thicken the soup we added lentils which were available in the Celtic times. Mrs Davies cooked the soup for us and we all tried it. Some of us enjoyed it and some of us were not to sure about it. Please have a look at our photos.

Our trip to St Fagans
On Tuesday the 17th
of October year 3 and 4 went to Saint Fagans by bus. First we went through
the forest, and ended up in a Celtic round house. We visited a woman called Eleri
and she told us all about when the Celts lived. Later Eleri took us into the
house. The first house was joined to another one, which looked a lot like a
kitchen with a bed in it. The bed had a mattress that was made out of straw and
had a deer skin on top because it was getting cold in the winter.
She also showed us weapons and a helmet and
reminded us what they looked like. The Celts had an oven that looked like an
igloo and there was a pot above the fire that looked like a witch’s cauldron.
The Celts had to go to the river every day to get water or do their business. A
bit later we went back into the other room to hold some Celtic objects. The
objects we held were a little wooden horse, a comb, a rock and a piece of metal
that sparked to make a fire, a necklace, a little sword. After we felt the
objects we took turns in having a go at grinding grain into flour.
After that we left the Celtic house and ate
lunch. Soon after we went to the castle, in the castle we saw a bedroom, a
kitchen, a living room and an office. Later we came out of the castle and
explored in a chapel. In the chapel there were special seats for the rich
people which were surrounded by boxes and above that was a platform with more
seats on, next to the box were stairs leading to the platform. Finally we went
back on the bus and went back to school.
We had a lovely day in Saint
Fagan’s.

Warburtons
Our Visit
from Warburtons
On Wednesday 13th September,
our class had a visit from Warburtons. They spoke to us about healthy eating
and making sure we eat a balanced diet, to stay fit and healthy. They explained
that we would be making a sandwich from a variety of ingredients. We would be
encouraged to make some healthy choices
for the fillings.
We made sure our hands were clean and we
also put on a hair net, along with an apron. There were lots of fillings to
choose from to make our sandwich healthy and tasty.
We had lots of fun. We were allowed to
take our sandwich home as well as a pack of Warburtons Toastie Pockets. An
enjoyable time was had by all.

Daerwynno
Our Trip
to Daerwynno Outdoor Centre
On
Thursday 25th May our class visited Daerwynno Outdoor Centre in
Llanwynno near Ynysybwl. It was a lovely hot day, perfect for a visit to a
forest.
We were split into three groups to take
part in different activities. One of the tasks was to develop our orienteering
skills. We had to use a map and compass to find different letters hidden around
the forest. We managed to find them all.
Another activity involved working as a team
to build a den. The den had to be large enough for the group to fit inside to
have lunch.
We also took part in different ‘team
building’ games where it was very important to communicate with each other and
help and encourage each other.

World Book Day
On Thursday 6th April we celebrated World Book Day.
We dressed up as a character from a book or wore our pyjamas and brought in a
book we like to read at bedtime. In class we did lots of activities like
writing a ‘synopsis’ for a book, designing our own book covers & book marks
as well as writing book reviews. We had lots of fun.
Look at our lovely photos!
